Alongside Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma from eps51, I have giving a bilingual poster design workshop for design students at Weißensee Kunsthochschule Berlin KHB, in Berlin, Germany. The workshop was part of the Right to Left event that took place in Berlin all through November until December.
Sascha started the workshop with a talk about vintage Egyptian cinema posters. The movies posters were drawn by hand and printed with the stone lithography technique. He also showed the urban landscape of Cairo through its bilingual ads and posters.
I followed Sascha with a talk about the Arabic calligraphy and contemporary Arabic typographic aspects.
After the talks, students practiced their calligraphic skills with Arabic calligraphy using calligraphy pens or just sticking two pens together to mimic the thick bamboo calligraphy pen.
Afterwards, each student decided on a movie title and started designing the bilingual posters, Arabic/German, Arabic/English, Arabic/French and Arabic/Chinese.
It was the first time for the students to draw and write Arabic letters.
